The masterplan for the Chesterfield Waterside development included a traffic free cycle route from the northern end connected by a new bridge to the TPT/NCN to end on Holbeck Close/Brimington Road, with a road crossing and shared path leading tto the railway station.
Sadly the masterplan has been ‘watered down’ over the years but the housing development at the northern end has got a shared path built alongside the river (albeit with some minor issues). With a future development phase inn the middle of the site there is the potential to extend that shared path to Holbeck Close.
The masterplan included a bridge over the river which would enable the the cycle route to not use the 40mph section of Brimington Road.
Bolsterstone who are the company overseeing the Waterside development originally proposed an inadequate bridge design and as far as we are aware have ‘washed their hands’ of it despite a commitment to provide a bridge.
We have organised two site meetings with representitives from DCC,CBC, Sustrans, TPT and Chesterfield Canal Trust to look at options about where the bridge could go. There is a vague idea but nothing actually agreed.
Progress
Spring 2025
Discussions with Chesterfield Canal Trust in spring 2025 about alternative sites for the
bridge and what would be acceptable when the river is made navigable.
