Promoting, encouraging and campaigning for safe and convenient local cycling opportunities
This is a short ride to the west of Chesterfield, just 12 miles but with some fairly steep ups and downs (about 500 feet). It is all on either tarmac or compacted tracks (soil or gravel). It should take no more than 2 hours including a refreshment stop at the Lamb Inn at Holymoorside. The ride will highlight 2 different cycle routes in and out of Chesterfield and will show some of the bridleways and lanes to the west of the town linking these routes together.
The route goes from Queens Park on the designated cycle route to Holmebrook Valley Park and then up through the Holme Hall estate on small roads onto a short section of track to get across to Ashgate Road. We then take the bridleway (Piper Lane) across to Baslow Road. This section is gravel and there is a short steep uphill to Baslow Road. We then cross Baslow Road for another short steep section on tarmac up Chander Hill Lane before we have a welcome long downhill on small lanes into Holymoorside and the Lamb Inn. We will return to the Park via Chatsworth Road and the East West cycle route.
This ride is suitable for all confident cyclists, capable of riding on short sections of gravel with a number of short steep uphills. It will be cycled at a slow / moderate pace. Hope to see you there
